Basically, the pear tree can be propagated like any fruit tree. However, obtaining new pear trees by removing moss, from cuttings or by grafting is not that easy and is more suitable for experienced gardeners.
How to propagate a pear tree?
A pear tree can be propagated by removing moss, cuttings or grafting. Moss is removed directly from the tree, cuttings are propagated using shoots cut at an angle and refined by combining them with a suitable base.
Ways for Propagating a Pear Tree:
- Moosen
- Cuttings
- Refining
Theoretically, you can also grow pear trees yourself from cores. However, this takes a very long time and pure trees cannot be obtained this way.
Moosen
The gardener understands moss removal as the extraction of a new plant directly on the tree without contact with the soil.
For this purpose, a he althy, straight shoot of the pear tree is selected in spring. It is cut at an angle several centimeters deep. A wedge is pushed into the incision to keep the wound open.
The area is wrapped with moss or cellulose and kept well moist. After rooting, the shoot is separated and planted in the intended location.
Cutting logs
A slightly woody shoot is cut off at an angle from the pear tree in spring. The lower leaves and flower buds are removed. The cutting stick is inserted with the slanted side down into garden soil that is not too loose.
So that the cutting gets enough moisture for root formation, it is recommended to attach a plastic film or a glass over the cutting.
After rooting, the cuttings are carefully dug up, first grown in the pot and later planted in the desired location.
Refining
Grafting is the most commonly used method of propagation and is best done in March or April. To do this, an annual shoot called a scion that is at least ten centimeters long is cut off at an angle.
Quince trees are often used as rootstock for grafting pear trees. Here, a suitable wedge is cut into the shoot, which serves as a support. The scion is clamped in and wrapped with raffia.
It takes a bit of skill to refine a pear tree. Through grafting, single-variety trees can be obtained, which can be more resistant to pests and diseases if they have good rootstock.
Tips & Tricks
Propagate a pear tree is usually only worthwhile if you want to get a very specific type of pear. Expect that not every attempt at propagation will be successful.
