Olive trees, especially the older ones, are a wonderful eye-catcher on the balcony, terrace or in the garden. However, anyone who wants to buy a stately specimen that is many decades or centuries old will quickly realize that such an olive tree can quickly cost several hundred to thousands of euros. So what price is actually appropriate for an olive tree?
How much does an olive tree cost?
An olive tree's price varies depending on age and size, from around 60 euros for young trees with a 10 cm trunk circumference to several thousand euros for centuries-old specimens. Please note the origin, variety and growing conditions when purchasing.
Olive trees from the hardware store
Sometimes you can get a real bargain at the hardware store or garden center: young olive trees - often as standard trees with a spherical cut crown - which are sold for around ten to twenty euros. These young trees are a maximum of one to two years old and are ideal for people who keep an olive tree as a houseplant or just want to try it out. However, these trees have no proof of origin, i.e. H. You cannot check where the sapling was raised. This is bad because you cannot know what the winter hardiness of the tree in question is. In addition, these are usually wild and not noble olives.
Buy an olive tree from a specialist
If you want to play it safe and maybe harvest olives yourself, then it's better to buy a noble olive from a specialist. This can be a tree nursery - for example in Italy or Spain - or a provider from Germany. Make sure that the tree you want was not simply imported, but that the dealer can provide you with specific information about the growing conditions. This is important because you should choose a tree that is used to the temperatures in your area. Also, not every one of the approximately 1,000 known varieties is suitable for cultivation in Germany.
How much does an olive tree cost?
Depending on age and size, an olive tree costs between 60 and several thousand euros. The older and larger such a tree is, the more expensive it is - trees that are several decades to centuries old, so-called solitary trees, are particularly expensive. A tree with a trunk circumference of around 10 centimeters costs between 60 and 90 euros, depending on whether it is a short trunk or a tall trunk. With a trunk circumference of twenty centimeters you already pay around 200 euros, with 50 centimeters around 450 to 500 euros. Alternatively, you can of course grow an olive tree yourself.
Tips & Tricks
Not every dealer, especially on the Internet, is reputable. Some dealers allegedly sell old olive trees at what seems like an unbelievable bargain price - these trees are usually specimens cut from the wild and usually won't survive for long. If prices seem too cheap, it's usually scammers at work - don't fall for them.
