The wild blueberries in Europe differ relatively greatly in taste and color from the cultivated blueberries, which were bred from American blueberry species and produce larger fruits.
When is the harvest time for wild blueberries?
The harvest time for wild blueberries is usually between the end of June and the end of August, but may be delayed by one to two weeks due to weather conditions in spring and early summer. When picking, pay attention to the dark blue color of the berries.
Summer fruit enjoyment from nature
Forest blueberries can usually be collected directly in the forest from around the end of June to the end of August. Depending on the weather in spring and early summer, this period can be moved forward or back by around one to two weeks. Since blueberries do not ripen, you should only pick them when they are dark blue in color. Due to the limited storage life, you should process wild blueberries that are not intended for fresh consumption as quickly as possible:
- cooking into jamsjuices
- to sophisticated liqueur creations
- as fruit in cakes
Be quick when enjoying fruit
Especially when harvesting with a blueberry comb, individual wild blueberries can easily tear due to their thin skin. These should be sorted out when washing, otherwise they will greatly increase the susceptibility of all collected blueberries to mold.
