The ideal location is flooded with light, with well-drained, loose and sandy soil. Pay attention to a planting distance of 2-4 meters and plant male and female specimens for a successful berry harvest.

The wild species is less suitable because it spreads quickly and aggressively via its roots. The following cultivars are much more suitable for the garden:

What does the ideal location look like?
Sea buckthorn needs a location flooded with light. It should not be planted under trees as it can reach a height of up to 6 m. It can also thrive in partial shade, but it is not satisfied with a shady spot.
Almost all soils are tolerated by sea buckthorn. It prefers well-drained, loose and sandy substrates. The substrate should be slightly acidic to neutral and have a low nutrient content. In addition, care should be taken to maintain a dry to slightly moist environment. The shrub can cope wonderfully with temporary flooding as well as drought.
Which neighbors feel comfortable in his presence?
It is best to plant sea buckthorn for yourself, as its root runners can easily displace less competitive plants. Otherwise, other wild fruit trees and bird food trees are suitable as neighbors for the sea buckthorn.
What distance should be maintained from neighboring plants?
Sea buckthorn wants 3 to 4 m of free space. However, if it is cut regularly, a distance of 2 m from other plants is sufficient. If several sea buckthorn bushes are planted, they can stand directly next to each other. These will later become a dense hedge.
When is sea buckthorn planted?
Pre-grown container plants can be planted outdoors all year round. However, it is ideal to plant the plants between October and November or at the end of February. Since they do not tolerate subsequent transplanting well, the choice of location should be carefully considered. The flowers appear for the first time three to four years after planting.
How can it be propagated later?
Sea buckthorn can be propagated via offshoots, runners, seeds and cuttings. The most recommended method is to propagate via its root runners. With them, the plant forms dense hedges on its own after a few years if it is not cut regularly.
