With hanging strawberries you can create a paradisiacal scenario on the balcony and terrace. You can discover the best varieties for hanging baskets and flower boxes here. There are also well-founded tips on how to plant correctly.

Which strawberry varieties are suitable for hanging planters?
Small wild strawberries and climbing monthly strawberries are suitable for hanging cultivation. Popular varieties include Merosa, Mignonette, Diamant and Hummi. They thrive in the limited substrate volume of hanging baskets and flower boxes. The location should be sunny and airy, with protection from storms and rain.
Heavenly varieties for vertical cultivation
In view of the long tendrils, in principle any strawberry plant is suitable for hanging cultivation. However, not every cultivation thrives in the narrow substrate volume of the planters. The typical garden strawberry is therefore out of the question. Small-growing wild strawberries and climbing monthly strawberries know how to adapt excellently to the limited conditions. The following varieties particularly stood out:
- Merosa: enchanting pink-red flowers of high ornamental value and delicious strawberries from June to October
- Mignonette: a variety for gourmets who want to snack on delicious strawberries from their deck chair
- Diamond: the gem among summer strawberries for the flower box
- Hummi: a pineapple-strawberry specifically bred for vertical cultivation
Plant perfectly in hanging baskets and balcony boxes
Prepare the substrate in good time so that it can settle before the actual planting date. We recommend pre-fertilized potting soil (€16.00 at Amazon), which is ideally enriched with compost and horn meal. Alternatively, rotted stable manure or horse manure can be used as an organic starting fertilizer. Suitable planters have one or more water drains in the bottom and are stable enough to support strawberry plants with rich fruit.
When choosing a location, consider that it is as sunny and airy as possible. Protection from strong gusts of wind should be guaranteed as well as from lashing rain. The planting process goes like this:
- Dig planting holes in the prepared substrate with twice the circumference of the root balls
- A suitable planting distance in the flower box is 20-25 centimeters
- use between 2 and 4 plants in a hanging basket
- the heart bud must not be covered with substrate
- slightly compress the earth with your fist
- leave a pouring edge of about 5 centimeters
- finally pour well
Tips & Tricks
There is a risk of waterlogging forming in every planter. You can effectively prevent this shortcoming by using drainage under the substrate. To do this, use inorganic material such as pebbles, grit or crushed shards of pottery. Spread these out over the floor openings. Place an air- and water-permeable garden fleece over this so that the drainage is not blocked by soil crumbs.
