A hazelnut in your own garden can become a burden over time and due to its considerable size and urge to multiply. However, removing it completely takes effort and time, because it is considered a survivor
How do you remove a hazelnut bush?
To remove a hazelnut bush, you can either regularly cut off new shoots until the plant no longer has any strength, or radically remove the roots, branches and trunks by digging them up and chopping them up. Both methods require patience and hard work.
Not an easy undertaking
If you don't plan well in advance, you'll be annoyed later. The hazelnut spreads quickly in its location and, if not trimmed regularly, can reach dimensions of up to 7 m in height.
However, its size is not the biggest problem. It is its roots that make removing it a complex procedure. Even if you saw the trunk of the hazelnut deep, it will sprout again above its root shoots. Two methods can help now!
Method No. 1: Regularity brings success
This method requires patience. How to proceed:
- Saw all branches and twigs mercilessly.
- Clear the trunk or trunks.
- As new shoots continue to appear over time: remove the new shoots.
- After about 3 years the plant runs out of strength and no longer sprouts.
Method No. 2: Radical and labor-intensive
This method is more labor-intensive. The roots of the hazelnut – regardless of whether it is a hazelnut tree or a hazelnut bush – are removed. This requires effort and a lot of time. The reason: Although the hazelnut has shallow roots, it has a strong taproot that can reach a depth of up to 4 m if you are unlucky.
Remove root:
- Saw the trunks together with the branches and twigs radically, for example with a chainsaw (€99.00 on Amazon).
- Expose everything around the hazelnut as deep as possible (lateral roots extend up to 6 m wide from the trunk).
- Expose and remove the root trunk.
- Chop up the remaining thick roots.
- Thin roots die over time.
Tips & Tricks
In order to avoid the procedure of removing the hazelnut, the choice of location should be carefully considered when planting. Once planted, the hazelnut is difficult to remove after just a few years.
