Of the more than 1000 existing mango varieties, only around 30 different types come onto the German market. They differ significantly from each other not only in shape and color but also in taste.
Which types of mango are particularly popular?
Some well-known mango varieties are Kent, Nam Dok Mai, Keitt, King, Manila Super Mango and Haden. They vary in color, shape, size and taste, with Kent and Manila Super Mango being particularly sweet, Nam Dok Mai being very creamy and Haden being aromatic.
Mangoes vary in size from about the size of a plum to fruits weighing around two kilos. However, most of the mangoes we sell weigh between 150 g and 680 g. The color varies between red, yellow and green. The shape of the mango can also be very different, for example heart-shaped, round or oval.
Popular mango varieties:
- Kent: from California, large round fruit, dark red skin with a little yellow, very sweet juicy flesh, small seed

When is a mango ripe?
The color reveals practically nothing about the ripeness of a mango. Depending on the variety, there are fully ripe deep green fruits and unripe but beautiful red fruits. Ripe mangoes smell very aromatic and give when lightly pressed with your finger. The emphasis is on “easy”. It must not be squeezed, otherwise a rotten spot will appear there. In addition, the peel of a ripe mango usually shows small dark spots.
Tips & Tricks
You can recognize a ripe mango by its intense scent. However, if it smells sour or alcoholic, then it is overripe and you should stop eating it.
