Initially inconspicuous, it produces pink flowers in midsummer and purple drupes in autumn, which remain decorative until winter. The orange-yellow autumn leaves are also not to be despised. The love pearl bush can be cultivated not only outdoors, but also in pots!
How do you cultivate a pearl of love bush in a container?
To cultivate a love pearl bush in a pot, choose a spacious, sunny to partially shaded location, use a low-lime, peat-rich substrate with a pH value between 5.5 and 6, fertilize 2-3 times a year and protect the bucket from frost in winter.
Where is there room for this large specimen?
The love pearl bush grows between 2 and 3 m high and up to 2 m wide. With these dimensions, it should be offered a spacious location. The location should be sunny to partially shaded and protected from the wind.
For example, places on the balcony or terrace on the wall of the house are ideal. There are also suitable locations in front of house entrances. But be careful: this plant is not designed for indoor cultivation. It doesn't get enough light there.
The right substrate is needed
Before you plant the pearl of love bush in the pot, the right substrate should be ready. It should have the following features:
- large proportion of peat
- small proportion of gravel or expanded clay
- feel free to add some compost, stone dust or horn shavings
- pH value between 5, 5 and 6 is optimal
- calcareous
- Keep moist in the long term by watering regularly
Fertilizing and cutting – essential?
If you grow it in a container, you should supply the pearl bush with fertilizer 2 to 3 times every year. Complete fertilizer is best for him. In addition to fertilizing, light annual pruning is recommended as care. However, these two procedures are not necessarily essential.
Protect from frost in winter
In winter you should protect your beautiful fruit in the bucket from frost. If the plant is to remain outside, the pot must be wrapped with fleece or another material. It should also be placed on Styrofoam or wood so that it doesn't freeze from below. After overwintering, you can repot the plant in a larger container (every 2 to 3 years).
Tip
Since the berries of the beautiful fruit are poisonous and at the same time tempting to snack on or play with, you should be careful that children do not come near and eat them.
