With coriander, every balcony is transformed into a Mediterranean spice garden. You can find out how to sow the handy seeds directly into the planter here. There are also instructions for caring for the tub and box.
How to grow coriander on the balcony?
To grow coriander on the balcony, sow the seeds directly in a plant box with herb soil that is at least 45 cm wide and 25 cm deep. Keep the soil moist and place the plants in a sunny location in May. Water and fertilize the plants moderately.
Sowing in the balcony box - it's that easy
Coriander doesn't like to be transplanted. To save the spice plant stress, we recommend sowing seeds directly into the planter. The best starting date is from the end of March to mid-April. How to do it right:
- the perfect balcony box is at least 45 cm wide and 25 cm deep
- Spread a thin layer of grit over the water drain in the ground as drainage
- Pour herbal soil over it or a potting soil-sand mixture and moisten it
- scatter the coriander seeds and sift them over a maximum of 0.5 cm as a light germinator
In a partially shaded window seat at an ideal 20-25 degrees Celsius, germination begins within a week. If you place the planter on the balcony, which is still cool, the seeds will take a little longer to grow. Keep the seeds and seedlings constantly moist. If there is a lot of space in the planter, select the weaker specimens at a planting distance of 15-20 centimeters.
How to take excellent care of coriander on the balcony
The outdoor season for coriander begins in May. Now the spice plants want to go to a sunny location where they should not come under the blazing midday sun. The focus of the care measures is on a reserved water and nutrient supply. Coriander copes better with moderately dry soil than with waterlogging. How to water and fertilize the plants correctly:
- only water when the substrate surface has dried
- fertilize every 3-4 weeks with an organic liquid preparation (€13.00 on Amazon)
If you plant coriander on the balcony in pre-fertilized soil, there is no need to add fertilizer. A mulch layer made of expanded clay has an advantageous effect. This does not release any unnecessary nutrients and keeps the potting soil warm and moist for longer.
Tips & Tricks
If sowing seeds in a planter box or pot is too time-consuming, buy young coriander plants at the market. Simply shorten the shoots to a few centimeters and place the root ball in a glass of water. If the plant sprouts again, plant it in herb or potting soil.
