Perhaps you have just moved into your new house and are wondering how you can get rid of the uncontrolled growth in your garden? Although a beautiful meadow also has its visual appeal, it also has the disadvantage that you shouldn't walk on it - so it is unsuitable as a play or lying area. With our tips you can transform your wild meadow into a beautiful, green lawn.
How can I convert a meadow into lawn?
To convert a meadow into lawn, you must first mow the meadow deeply, lift the scar, dig up the soil, remove roots, possibly make soil improvements and work in mature compost. After about 2-3 weeks of rest, remove any weeds that have emerged and start sowing at temperatures from 10 °C.
Prepare soil for reseeding
However, before you can start sowing, you must prepare the soil accordingly. If you want to achieve an even, green lawn, simply digging up the meadow is unfortunately not enough - the weeds would keep coming through due to the rhizomes and seeds still in the soil. That's why you should first mow the meadow as deep as possible and then remove the scar with a flat spade. Then proceed as follows:
- Dig up the soil thoroughly, removing stones and roots.
- If necessary, improve the soil: Add peat and more loamy sand to sandy soils.
- Work in mature compost, preferably mixed with sand or peat, as basic fertilizer.
- Let the soil rest for about two to three weeks.
- Now remove any weeds that have emerged, then tear up the soil and crumble it finely (e.g. with a rake).
- Start sowing when soil temperatures are above 10 °C.
- Sow as evenly as possible and rake the seeds flat.
- Raking is better than flattening the fine seeds.
- Now fertilize with a special starter fertilizer (€13.00 on Amazon) for lawns.
- Cover the seeds loosely with peat moss to protect them from voracious birds.
- Important: Water the lawn regularly because the sensitive seeds must not dry out!
You can mow your young lawn carefully for the first time when the blade is about 10 centimeters long.
Spraying weeds with Roundup?
Many gardeners swear by simply spraying off annoying weeds with Roundup. However, the active ingredient in this weed killer, glyphosate, has recently fallen into disrepute - quite rightly so, as glyphosate is considered to be highly carcinogenic. Do not let the EU Food Safety Authority or the German Federal Office for Risk Assessment mislead you about the dangers of the product. Numerous scientists have already taken a stand against their incorrect assessment.
Tips & Tricks
The best time to start laying a new lawn is early spring. Work the soil during a dry phase in March so that you can finally plant the seeds from around mid to late May.
