The New Year has begun. Many gardeners are impatient in the starting blocks. Now is the right time to plant the flower tube at home. But why and how does it work?
How to grow canna at home?
In order to grow canna successfully, you should free the rhizomes from soil in January, shorten the roots, divide them into pieces and place them in pots 2/3 filled with soil (€6.00 on Amazon). Place the pots in a warm, bright location and water sparingly. After 1-2 weeks, shoots begin to grow out of the soil.
Benefits of Advancing Canna
Promoting Canna at home has several advantages. The advantage that most convinces most canna enthusiasts is that the flowers appear earlier. Furthermore, pre-teeing has the advantage of being able to plant strong young plants later that do not die so quickly. On top of that, the small canna plants bring lively greenery into the living room and are fun to grow.
Conducting the advance of canna
Overwintering of Canna rhizomes can end in January. Then it's time to move forward. Remove soil from the rhizomes and shorten the roots.
Then it is good if the rhizomes are divided into pieces with one to three eyes. Sort out unusable pieces and compost them. The other pieces go into a pot 2/3 filled with soil (€6.00 on Amazon) and 8 to 10 cm wide.
So it continues:
- Place rhizomes with the eyes horizontally and in the middle of the pot
- Cover rhizomes with soil up to the edge of the pot
- water sparingly
- place in a bright and warm place (e.g. on a windowsill above a heater)
- ideal temperature: 20 to 25 °C
- After 1 to 2 weeks the shoots shoot out of the ground
The following applies: everything else as usual
The planting time of Canna does not change due to advance. The young plants grown at home should only be planted out after the last frost in spring. This is usually the case between mid and late May (after the Ice Saints). When planting out, the cannas should be placed in nutrient-rich and pre-fertilized soil.
Tips & Tricks
Beware of sunburn: slowly get your young cannas used to direct sunlight. In spring, place the pots out on the balcony or terrace for a few hours every day during the day.
