They shine white, pink or dark red and enchant every autumn garden with their beautiful colors - autumn anemones are among the most beautiful and robust flowers of autumn. The variety of varieties is so large that the choice is not easy.
Which autumn anemone varieties are popular?
Popular autumn anemone varieties are 'Honorine Jobert' (white, semi-double), 'Robustissima' (pink, unfilled), 'Praecox' (dusky pink, unfilled), 'Ouvertüre' (shades of pink, unfilled), 'Pamina' (purple-pink, semi-double) and 'Prinz Heinrich' (magenta-red, double). In terms of size, location and flower structure, choose the right one for your garden.
Double or unfilled flowers
The appearance of autumn anemones is not uniform. There are varieties with simple flowers consisting of five petals. Semi-double and completely double flowers are also possible.
The shape and size of the flowers also vary depending on the variety. The petals can be pointed, rounded or have a ray shape.
The three main cultural forms
The gardener distinguishes between the three main forms of culture:
- Anemone hupehensis
- Anemone tomentosa
- Anemone japonica
Anemone hupehensis is also called the Japanese autumn anemone, while the Anemone tomentosa is a felt-leaved autumn anemone. Anemone japonica is a special cultivated form of Anemone hupehensis that has produced its own cultivars.

Consider the size and location of the garden
When choosing the right autumn anemone variety for your garden, you should consider the size and location. Very tall varieties tend to spread widely. They are therefore not well suited for small gardens.
For small gardens or planting in pots, choose low varieties that produce fewer runners. Even in gardens that are very exposed to the wind, you will enjoy low autumn anemone varieties more.
In the first year after planting, all autumn anemone varieties need winter protection. It takes two years for the perennials to settle in properly and become truly hardy. But then they are almost indestructible.
