The snowball hydrangea “Annabelle” is a strong and richly flowering shrub that can grow up to two meters high and just as wide. “Annabelle” prefers a semi-shady location, but also feels comfortable in the sun and even in the shade.
Which location does the Annabelle hydrangea prefer?
The ideal hydrangea Annabelle location selection consists of light shade, without direct midday sun, and humus-rich, fresh soil. But places in full sun or shade are also possible. Make sure the soil is loose, well-drained, nutritious and slightly acidic to neutral.
Light shadow is ideal for “Annabelle”
In a protected place under taller trees that provide light shade without midday sun, with humus and fresh soil, the snowball hydrangea “Annabelle” can develop into a wonderfully flowering shrub with numerous large flower umbels. But you can also successfully cultivate “Annabelle” in more extreme locations, be they in full sun or in deep shade. Much more important than the lighting conditions is the soil, which should be loose and well-drained, humic, nutritious and slightly acidic to neutral.
Tips & Tricks
If the soil is very alkaline (i.e. pH value above 7), your viburnum hydrangea “Annabelle” will bleach and its foliage will gradually turn light yellow. This typical symptom is called chlorosis. However, higher pH values are tolerated if sufficient nutrients - especially iron - are available.
