While they are blooming, cyclamen attract a lot of attention. They then pass the scepter on to other perennials. This is the case in summer. But what do cyclamens do in summer while other perennials are blooming?
How to care for cyclamen in summer?
In summer, cyclamen can regenerate in shady places in the garden. Watering should be reduced and fertilized from the end of June. Propagation and repotting can be done in early summer, while summer cyclamen blooms from August to September.
Regenerate outside
Summertime means regeneration time for the cyclamen. It should be protected for 8 weeks and allowed to regenerate outside. Cyclamen that were kept in pots indoors during flowering should be brought outside in summer.
Reduce fertilizing and watering
During the rest period, the cyclamen should be watered sparingly and not fertilized. The earth should not dry out. As a precaution, it is advisable to mulch the root area of the cyclamen.
The water supply is slowly reduced from the end of the flowering period. This is recommended so that the leaves dry out. If you do not limit watering and fertilizing and thus prevent a rest period, you must expect that your cyclamen will have a shorter life expectancy.
You shouldn't expect too much from the cyclamen until June. From the end of June/beginning of July you can fertilize gently again. In late summer (towards the end of September) you can move the cyclamen back indoors.
Cyclamens don’t like heat or drought
To make oversummering work: Place your cyclamen in a shady spot in the garden. Locations under bushes or shady trees are well suited. There, these heat-sensitive perennials are spared from summer heat and drought.

Before the cyclamen's growing season begins again in late summer, you have various options, some of which would be rather harmful to the plant during the growing season:
- Repotting
- Transplanting
- Division of the tuber
- Sowing the seeds
Summer cyclamen blooms from August to September
But there is one exception: the summer cyclamen. As a rule, their flowering begins in August and lasts until September. Such specimens should always be kept or planted as cool as possible. Otherwise they won't bloom for long.
Tips & Tricks
The first flower buds on the cyclamen should have formed by autumn. If this is not the case, it may be that the cyclamen did not survive the summer and died due to drought, for example.
