Aloe Vera comes from the dry areas of Africa and loves sun. Thanks to its fleshy leaves in which it stores water, aloe can survive for long periods without rain. In this country it is particularly popular as an easy-care houseplant.
Can you leave aloe vera outside?
Aloe Vera can be left outside from the beginning of June, preferably in a warm and sunny place. In full sun the leaves may turn brown, which is normal. Avoid waterlogging, water occasionally and fertilize sparingly.
Aloe is believed to be native to South Africa. Many different types of aloe now grow in Africa, Asia, Central America and the Mediterranean. Aloe vera is of interest to the cosmetics industry due to its skin-caring and regenerating substances. That is why the plant is cultivated on large areas in South and Central America as well as in Spain. The average temperatures of 20-25° Celsius and short, heavy rainfall are optimal for the growth of heat-loving plants.
Aloe vera or real aloe usually grows without a stem. Its 30-60 cm long, smooth, shiny, thorny leaves are arranged in a rosette shape. Its tubular flowers in yellow, red or orange, which appear in spring, make aloe vera an attractive houseplant that
- thrives on south-facing windows, in winter gardens and greenhouses,
- stores water in its thick leaves,
- is frugal in care.
Aloe vera can be left outside in summer
Your aloe vera feels comfortable outside from around the beginning of June. It loves sun and therefore needs a correspondingly warm and sunny garden spot. In full sun their leaves sometimes turn brown. This phenomenon is normal and serves as sun protection. While the aloe vera is outdoors, it should be watered vigorously occasionally. It doesn't like waterlogging, so you should always ensure that the excess water can drain away. During this time you can also fertilize sparingly with succulent fertilizer (€6.00 on Amazon).
Bring aloe vera into your home in winter
Aloe vera should be brought back into the house by September at the latest. It cannot tolerate frost; temperatures below 5° Celsius are threatening to it. In the house it can be kept cooler (10-15° Celsius) during the cold season. In this case, watering should be reduced to a minimum and fertilizing should be stopped completely.
Tips & Tricks
You can promote flower formation by overwintering your aloe vera at temperatures of around 10° Celsius.
