The carnation (Silene), like the Dianthus carnations, belongs to the carnation family. Like this one, it prefers a location that is as sunny as possible.
Which location does the carnation prefer?
The optimal location for carnations is a full sun spot on well-drained, not too moist and humus-rich soil. The plant is particularly suitable for gravel gardens, natural gardens or perennial beds and does not tolerate prolonged moisture.
The more sun the better
The easy-care carnation prefers a location in full sun on soil that is not too moist, permeable and rich in humus. The plant is a special eye-catcher in gravel gardens or in naturally designed gardens. The plant, which grows up to 80 centimeters high, also comes into its own in herbaceous beds together with perennials such as saintwort (Santolina) or felty hornwort (Cerastium tomentosum). Since carnations can grow quite wide, you should not plant more than five to seven plants per square meter. The otherwise easy-care plant does not tolerate moisture, especially winter moisture.
Tip
Propagation occurs through seeds that are sown either as soon as they are ripe or in spring. However, the plant also seeds itself willingly and in large numbers.
