The Astilbe is robust, but not entirely undemanding. If it is in the right location and is watered regularly, then it hardly needs any further care. This makes it very suitable for ambitious gardening beginners.
Which location is optimal for astilbene?
The ideal location for an astilbe offers cool and moist conditions, no direct access to midday sun, proximity to ponds or streams and nutrient-rich soil. Astilbes even manage to create attractive color accents in dark garden corners.
This is what the magnificent spars need
Astilbes originally come from Japan's moist forests. This explains their preference for damp and rather cool locations. Too much sun, especially in the warm midday period, is not good for them. They only tolerate it if the soil is particularly moist. The astilbe likes to stand on a stream or the bank of a pond because the root ball should not dry out.
Water your astilbe regularly and abundantly. It is best to use rainwater that you collect in a rain barrel. Tap water often contains too much lime, which the astilbe doesn't like. Also keep this in mind when cutting astilbe for the vase.
Since it needs a lot of nutrients, you should fertilize your astilbe in spring and autumn. Well-rotted compost is best suited for this. In winter, magnificent spars do not need fertilizer.
Which plants go well with astilbe?
Astilbes harmonize best with plants that prefer the same site conditions as themselves. These include the azaleas and rhododendrons that bloom in spring or green ferns. On the other hand, blue-flowering plants such as the columbine or monkshood form interesting contrasts.
