Their buds are reminiscent of small, bright lanterns, their flowers are more like bells. Their names fit the plant perfectly: balloon flower or Chinese bellflower. Very decorative and a little sophisticated, they decorate many flower gardens.
How do I plant balloon flowers correctly?
To plant balloon flowers successfully, choose a sunny to partially shaded location, prepare a deep planting hole with permeable, nutrient-rich soil, add fertilizer or compost and water the plant well.
The ideal location
Before planting, think carefully about the location of the balloon flower because it doesn't like being transplanted. This is due, among other things, to their deep taproots. The balloon flower prefers sunny to partially shaded areas, protected from cold winds and heavy rain. Give it enough space, because over the years it will grow a little wider.
The best soil
Unlike many other garden plants, the soil for the balloon flower can be a little calcareous, but it should definitely contain plenty of nutrients. When planting, add some compost (€12.00 on Amazon) or horn shavings to the planting hole to enrich the soil. If the soil is not permeable, waterlogging easily forms. The balloon flower doesn't get that at all. In this case, loosen the soil with some sand.
Preparing the planting
The distance between the individual plants should be around 30 cm, or a little more for larger specimens. These should not necessarily be planted at the front edge of the bed; they are ideal for the garden background. Dig the planting hole deep enough, the balloon flower will develop quite deep taproots and add organic fertilizer to the hole before inserting the plant.
The best planting time
The best time to plant the hardy balloon flower is spring, at least when planting outdoors. Potted and balcony plants can be planted almost at any time. However, if possible, avoid planting or repotting during the flowering period. After planting, the balloon flower must be watered well.
The most important planting tips for balloon flowers:
- sunny to partially shaded location
- permeable soil
- dig deep planting hole
- Add fertilizer or compost to the planting hole
- Be sure to water the balloon flower well
Tip
Plant blue balloon flowers in a sunny spot to preserve the color, while white ones should be planted in partial shade.
