It is very easy to propagate. It is undemanding to care for and does not take up much space. But does bergenia grow equally well in every location?
Which location is suitable for bergenia?
For an ideal location for the bergenia, choose a sunny to semi-shady place, such as the edges of trees or rock gardens, with enough distance (at least 40 cm) from other plants. Permeable, nutrient-rich soils with acidic to alkaline pH values are preferred.
Too shady – too lazy to bloom
If you plant your Bergenia in a location that is too shady, sooner or later you have to expect that the Bergenia will become lazy and eventually stop blooming at all.
The following aspects must be taken into account when choosing a location:
- sunny to partially shaded
- well suited: woody edges, water edges, rock gardens, wild herb beds
- Beneficial plant neighbors: lavender, hostas, stonecrop
- leave enough space (at least 40 cm)
- permeable, nutrient-rich, acidic to alkaline soils preferred
Tip
Freshly propagated specimens such as cuttings and divided bergenias should not be exposed to the sun. It is warm there and the rooting is getting underway. But the water evaporating too quickly throws a spanner in the works.
