A rarity, that is the dittany. It originally comes from Central Europe and thrives in local gardens. Its white-pink flowers, which are vaguely reminiscent of mallows, smell wonderfully of vanilla and citrus fruits. But how is the diptam planted correctly?

How to plant diptam properly?

To plant Diptam properly, choose a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained, moderately nutrient-rich, humus-rich, calcareous and dry substrate. Plant in autumn or early spring, ensure a planting distance of at least 50 cm and keep the soil moist initially.

Which location should it be?

Its natural habitat is heathland, dry meadows and areas on the edge of trees. The location should therefore be sunny to partially shaded. A warm and wind-protected location is ideal. A place in the shade should be out of the question.

Which substrate is suitable for growth?

The substrate at its roots should also awaken feelings of home. Before planting, the soil should always be loosened. The following characteristics are then crucial for good growth, he alth and abundant flowering:

  • well drained
  • moderately nutritious
  • humos
  • calcareous
  • gladly rocky
  • dry environment

When and how to plant diptam?

A good time to plant is in the fall. Alternatively, early spring is a good time. Don't worry: the diptam is well hardy and can survive frost. It can be planted directly in the bed or grown in a pot.

The planting distance should be at least 50 cm. Pour a portion of compost (€12.00 on Amazon) into the planting hole to give the dittany a jump start. After planting, the soil should be kept moist. Attention: Diptam is often nibbled on by snails!

Which plants does Dittany look good next to?

Due to its tall and straight growth as well as its large number of beautiful flowers, the diptam is perfect as a solitaire. But it also looks good next to other plants. These include, among others:

  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Sage
  • Irises
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Thistles
  • Gamander

How is sowing done?

Sowing the easy-care diptam is difficult. The main reason is that this is a cold germinator.

Seeds to be sown in autumn need a cool period with temperatures between 0 and 4 °C for at least 2 weeks. You can help by storing the seeds in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Tip

When dealing with the dittany, remember that all parts of it are poisonous!
