Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium caeruleum) is sometimes also called Blue Sky's Ladder or Barrierwort. The group-forming perennial, up to 90 centimeters high, develops panicles of delicate blue flowers with bright yellow stamens on upright stems from the end of May to July. It self-seeds heavily and can become a nuisance.

The ideal location for Jacob's ladder (Polemonium caeruleum) is a place in the garden that is as sunny to minimally shaded as possible with well-drained, moist, nutrient-rich soil. Waterlogging and dryness should be avoided.

The Jacob's Ladder prefers a spot in the garden that is as sunny as possible to minimally partially shaded (yet always bright!). The soil should be nutrient-rich and not too dry - on the contrary, because the perennial prefers a rather moist location. Nevertheless, the soil should be permeable, as waterlogging is not tolerated.
Ideal for natural gardens
The species, which occurs naturally in wet meadows in Europe, Asia and Northern Europe, should also be used accordingly in the garden. It is well suited for natural designs and in combinations with non-harassing companion plants such as dog chamomile (Anthemis). You can also plant Jacob's ladders in perennial beds as long as the soil is moist enough.
Tip
Jacob's Ladders should be watered in summer when it is dry. Cut out wilted inflorescences regularly to extend the flowering period.
