Bushy and cheerful growth, flowering from May to October and covering the ground well underneath - that's the busy Lieschen. Whether on the balcony or outdoors, for example in the perennial bed, certain basic knowledge is helpful when planting
How do you plant the Busy Lizzie correctly?
The busy Lieschen prefers partially shaded, wind-protected locations. It should be planted in well-drained, sandy-loamy, nutrient- and humus-rich, loose soil. The best planting time is after the Ice Saints in May, with a planting distance of at least 20 cm.
Are sunny or partially shaded locations better?
If you have the choice, then plant the busy Lieschen in a partially shaded location rather than in a full sun location. Full sun should only be an option if you can ensure the soil doesn't dry out. Furthermore, the location should be protected from the wind, otherwise the delicate shoots could bend.
What properties should the earth have?
The substrate also plays a crucial role for the busy Lieschen and its growth. If it is planted in a pot, it should be as narrow as possible. Then the busy Lieschen will bloom even more prolifically! An earth with the following properties triggers well-being:
- well-drained (absolutely does not tolerate waterlogging)
- sandy-loamy
- rich in nutrients and humus
- easy
Which planting partners are suitable for the busy Lieschen?
A well-cared for Busy Lieschen looks stunning next to the following flowers and grasses:
- Fuchsias
- Lobelias
- Petunias
- Pelargoniums
- Purple Bells
- Edellieschen
- Begonias
- Sedges
- Pennisetum grass
When and how are these flowers planted?
This is a frost-sensitive specimen. Therefore, you should only plant it around mid-May (after the Ice Saints). Make sure there is a planting distance of at least 20 cm and add some compost to the soil!
How does reproduction work?
There are two options for propagation: sowing or cuttings. For propagation by cuttings, top cuttings are cut in the fall. The lowest leaves are removed and the cuttings are placed in pots with potting soil (€6.00 on Amazon). They root after about 3 weeks in a moist substrate.
The seeds are ripe when the fruit capsules are light green and glassy. Collect them and sow them between January and March! Germination temperatures between 16 and 18 °C are ideal. Attention: The seeds are light germinators! The plants can come outside from May.
Tip
Since the flowers tolerate rain poorly, you should choose a covered location or plant the plant straight into the pot on the balcony or terrace!
