Red currants are not very demanding when it comes to their location. But in a place where the bush feels comfortable, it bears more fruit and does not suffer as much from diseases. What conditions should the location meet?
What should the location for red currants be like?
The ideal location for red currants is warm and partially shaded with a few hours of direct sun, preferably in the morning and evening. However, you should avoid hot midday sun and ensure sufficient planting distance. A protected location helps against late frosts.
Warm and bright but not too sunny
Red currants thrive particularly well in a warm, partially shaded location. They also like direct sun for a few hours a day - especially in the morning and evening.
Hot midday sun, however, is difficult for the shrubs to tolerate.
A very good location is in partial shade under tall trees. However, maintain sufficient planting distance when planting. It should be at least half as wide as the full-grown shrub will later be tall.
Tip
Red currants bloom very early. Late frosts in spring cause the flowers to freeze. Therefore, make sure that the red currant is in a somewhat protected location.
