Depending on the variety, real jasmine blooms as a houseplant in the house from March to May or in spring. It forms long tendrils that should be grown on a trellis. With proper care, you can enjoy this beautiful houseplant for many years.
How do I care for my jasmine houseplant?
To care for jasmine as a houseplant, you need a bright location, regular watering when the top layer of soil is dry, and liquid fertilizer every 14 days during the growing season. In winter you should keep it cool at 5-10 degrees Celsius.
The right location in the house
Jasmine likes it bright, even full sun. A place in the flower window is suitable, provided that the pot is not too crowded. The window should be able to be opened, as frequent ventilation is good for the jasmine. Avoid drafts.
However, you should protect jasmine from direct midday sun. The window glass acts like a burning glass and leaves ugly brown spots on the leaves.
The jasmine will do even better if you care for it in a pot on the terrace or balcony in summer. You just have to bring it back into the house in time before the frost.
It's all about the right pot
- Clean pot
- large trigger hole
- lightly nutritious soil
- Drainage layer
- Mix soil with expanded clay
- Trail support
The pot must be clean and large enough for the root ball. A large drainage hole is important so that the irrigation water can drain away. Jasmine cannot tolerate waterlogging at all.
Normal potting soil with a little mature compost is sufficient as potting soil. Alternatively, buy soil for flowering plants (€10.00 on Amazon) from a hardware store. If you would like to grow jasmine as a bonsai, a mixture of 80% Akadama and 20% compost soil is ideal. To avoid waterlogging, you should create a drainage layer in the bottom of the pot or loosen the soil with expanded clay.
You need to repot the jasmine in fresh soil at least every three years in spring.
How to water and fertilize your houseplant properly
Jasmine doesn't like it too dry but not too moist either. Water the plant whenever the top layer of soil has dried out. Pour off excess water immediately.
In the house, the jasmine likes it if you spray it with water once a day to increase the humidity.
You need to fertilize jasmine as a houseplant every 14 days during the growing season with a liquid fertilizer.
Do you have to cut real jasmine?
Basically, you don't have to cut the indoor jasmine at all. You can only use scissors if the tendrils get too long. Shorten the shoots only slightly so that you do not remove too many flower buds.
Jasmine has to stay cool in winter
In winter, jasmine needs a cool phase. It is then far too warm in the heated living room. As a result, the houseplant will not bloom the next year.
Place the pot in a bright place where the temperature is between five and ten degrees.
Tip
You can easily propagate indoor jasmine yourself. To do this, cut cuttings in spring and place them in small pots.
