In summer, many balconies glow red, pink or white again - the time of geraniums has arrived again. In fact, these plants seem to be among Germans' favorite balcony flowers, as they are part of the streetscape in both the city and the country. What hardly anyone knows, however, is that geraniums (which, by the way, are actually called pelargoniums) do not originally come from Central European regions, but from the dry and hot regions of Southeast Africa.
Which location do geraniums prefer?
Geraniums prefer a sheltered, sunny location as they come from the dry and hot regions of southeast Africa. The more sun they receive, the more luxuriantly and beautifully they bloom. Protect plants from too much moisture to prevent disease.
Sunny and warm, then the geraniums will work too
As in their natural habitat, geraniums need a protected and, above all, sunny location. The more sun the plants get, the more luxuriantly and beautifully they bloom. The fact that geraniums are actually desert plants is quickly noticeable, especially in rainy summers: if the flowers are exposed to a lot of moisture, they quickly become unsightly. The same applies to the leaves, because various diseases caused by fungi or bacteria, such as geranium rust or bacterial wilt, are due to excessive moisture.
Tip
If it rains frequently, make sure that your geraniums are protected from moisture coming from above and that the leaves and flowers are not exposed to any risk of infection.
