It's not just snails that can be a big evil. Frost can also scare autumn anemones. But is that always the case or can autumn anemones also be hardy?
Are autumn anemones hardy and what protective measures are recommended?
Are autumn anemones hardy? Older specimens can easily survive frost down to -20°C, while freshly divided, transplanted or younger plants are more sensitive. Protective measures can include pine twigs, leaves, fleece or compost on the root area and tying the perennial together.
Older specimens tolerate frost without any problems
Not all autumn anemones are frost-resistant. Only those specimens that are already a few years old are rooted sufficiently deeply that they can handle frost well. Even when temperatures drop to -20 °C, most older autumn anemones still survive.
Which specimens are considered more sensitive to frost than others?
The following autumn anemones are more sensitive when it comes to frost:
- freshly shared copies
- recently transplanted specimens
- newly sown specimens
- those specimens that are in rough locations
- those specimens that were planted in a pot
- all those who have only been at the location for one, two or three years
How and with what can you protect the perennial?
Autumn anemones do not need any special winter protection. Like most other perennials, pine twigs, fleece, leaves or compost soil are sufficient for them. You should place one of these materials on the root area of frost-sensitive specimens.
It is also advisable to tie the perennial together. A normal knit is sufficient for this. Tying them together protects the autumn anemone from falling over, for example due to a thick layer of snow. Be careful not to cut the stems in the fall! They serve to protect the plant from winter moisture.
Protect autumn anemones in the pot
If your autumn anemone is in a pot, you should definitely protect it. To do this, wrap the bucket or pot with fleece or jute. Then place the vessel on an insulating surface, e.g. B. made of wood or Styrofoam in a protected location such as under the eaves on the house wall.
Work after winter: fertilizing, cutting and more
After winter the following is coming up:
- Remove winter protection
- loose up the soil
- if applicable dig up and share
- if applicable Cutting root cuttings
- if applicable transplant
- cut down to 10 cm above the ground
- Provide with compost or other fertilizer
Tip
Autumn anemones are particularly sensitive to moisture in winter. Rot is often the result. Therefore, make sure that water can drain away quickly!
