The viburnum bush is very suitable for planting a hedge. Whether you are planning a bird protection hedge or want to create privacy and noise protection, there is a suitable plant for every occasion among the more than 100 viburnum species.
What is suitable for a viburnum hedge?
A viburnum hedge provides year-round privacy and noise protection when evergreen species such as the wrinkled viburnum are planted. Native varieties of the common viburnum are suitable for a bird protection hedge. Plant the hedge in spring or autumn.
The bird protection hedge
Many native bird species serve as a source of food in the winter because they remain attached to the bush well into the winter. Some birds don't eat the bright red fruits at all. However, all parts of the snowball bush are slightly poisonous to humans, although the fruits can also be used to make tasty jam. When you cook, the toxins are lost.
The snowball as privacy and noise protection
Evergreen shrubs with the largest possible leaves are particularly suitable as visual and/or noise protection, at least if you want full protection all year round. The wrinkle-leaved viburnum, for example, is ideal here.
It is evergreen, grows to around three to five meters high and has large oval leaves that offer good protection. To prevent the wrinkle-leaved viburnum from becoming bald near the ground, you should cut it regularly.
How to plant a hedge
Just like individual viburnum bushes, it is best to plant your hedge in spring or early autumn. You can also transplant potted plants in summer. Be sure to choose one of the really hardy species, then your hedge will not need any winter protection.
When planting in autumn, please note that the viburnum bushes then have enough time to grow and form strong roots. Thorough watering of the newly planted bushes is important in spring. You should not cut the hedge in the first year.
Tips for planting a hedge:
- evergreen shrubs provide sound and privacy protection all year round
- If possible, use plants that grow at approximately the same speed
- Combine shrubs with the same/similar location requirements
Tip
Native varieties of viburnum are recommended for a bird protection hedge; evergreen species are best suited for privacy or noise protection.
