In the wild, the various types of cowslip - especially the common cowslip and the high cowslip, also known as the forest cowslip - have become quite rare. Here, the early bloomers, which are protected, can be found primarily in meadows as well as in sparse oak or mixed beech forests or on the edges of forests. The plants also prefer a sunny location in the garden.
Where is the ideal location for cowslips?
Primroses prefer a sunny to partially shaded location with loose, humus-rich and calcareous soil. They thrive particularly well under trees and should be planted in autumn at a distance of 10 to 15 cm.

Primroses feel particularly comfortable in sunny to partially shaded locations, whereby the soil should be as humic, loose and calcareous as possible. Garden soil that is too heavy - such as clayey soil - can be loosened up with plenty of sand and lime. The early bloomer looks particularly beautiful when planted under trees.
It is best to plant primroses in autumn
Primroses should best be planted or sown in autumn, whereby the perennial, once it has become native, sows itself very reliably. If you want to prevent self-sowing, you must remove the dead inflorescences. The individual cowslips are ideally planted at a distance of 10 to 15 centimeters.
