The hollyhock, sometimes also called the farmer's rose, should not be missing in a cottage garden or a garden close to nature. But it also grows where you would hardly expect it: on house walls and in narrow gaps in the path. You can take advantage of this.

How do you plant hollyhocks correctly?

For planting hollyhocks, a location in full sun, protected from the wind and with permeable and nutrient-rich soil should be chosen. Planting distance is approx. 40 cm. Overpotted hollyhocks are planted out from May, outdoor seeds are transplanted in September. Water well after planting and support if necessary.

The right soil and the best location

Hollyhocks like nutrient-rich and permeable soil, but not waterlogging. Choose a location that is as full of sun and sheltered from the wind as possible. It feels most comfortable there, as it shows with its lush blooms and he alth. In humidity and in full shade it cares and tends to mallow rust.

The hollyhock also thrives in light shade, but in a windy place it needs protection so that it doesn't tip over. Tie up or support tall-growing hollyhocks, especially if they are planted individually. Loosen solid ground a little with coarse sand and enrich nutrient-poor soil with compost or manure. Hollyhocks look particularly beautiful when planted in groups along walls or fences.

When is the best time to plant?

Hollyhocks that have been grown in pots over the winter can be planted out from May. If you have sown the plants outdoors, then from September it is time to transplant the hollyhocks to the place where they will bloom next year. Plant your hollyhocks in a bed, then keep a distance of around 40 cm between the individual plants.

Planting the hollyhock in unusual places

Have you ever seen pictures of Danish streets with houses in front of which hollyhocks are blooming? They are not in the front garden, but directly on the wall of the house on the sidewalk or on the side of the street. This sight is beautiful and not that rare. You too can let your hollyhocks bloom on the house wall.

Hollyhocks are difficult to plant in narrow cracks. Be careful not to break the roots. You may need to remove pavers to create a large enough planting hole. It's easier if you sow the hollyhock right there.

Add some compost to the planting or seed hole and ensure sufficient moisture. After flowering, cut this hollyhock about a hand's width above the ground to extend the lifespan of this plant.

The best planting tips for hollyhocks:

  • location in full sun if possible
  • permeable and nutrient-rich soil
  • Planting distance approx. 40 cm
  • pour well
  • Planting time for early hollyhocks: May
  • Transplanting outdoor seeds: in September

Tip

Plant hollyhocks on a dreary wall and delight yourself and those around you with the colorful flowers.
