When and how should you repot a desert rose?

Repotting a desert rose should be done in spring, before new growth, or alternatively in early summer after the first flowering. Old soil and roots should be removed, drainage created and cactus soil used as a substrate. After repotting, do not water or cut the plant immediately.

Spring – time to repot

If the desert rose has come through the winter he althy and overwintering is slowly completed towards the end of February/beginning of March, the perfect time for repotting has come.

It is important that you repot your desert rose before the new shoots appear. Then it is not yet full of juice, is still at rest and therefore tolerates repotting best and usually without damage.

Alternative: In early summer

If you completely forgot to repot in spring, you can repot the desert rose later. Although later is not ideal, it is still an option. When the first bloom has died down, the desert rose can be repotted. This is usually the case in July.

How often is repotting necessary?

In contrast to other potted and container plants, it is only necessary to repot the desert rose every few years. The reason: the slow growth of this steppe plant. You can tell if you need to repot because the roots of the plant are sticking out of the pot's drainage holes.

Step by step into the new pot

Here we go:

  • Carefully remove the desert rose from the old pot
  • shake off old soil from the roots
  • if applicable cut off dried, rotten, old roots
  • Create a new vessel (with drainage holes!) with drainage
  • well suited as a substrate: cactus soil (€12.00 at Amazon)
  • or your own mixture e.g. B. made of sand, pumice, perlite and potting soil
  • Place desert rose in the middle
  • cover with substrate
  • press

After repotting, you should not cut the desert rose immediately. Please wait – if at all – at least 4 weeks! It is also worth noting that you should not water the desert rose immediately after repotting it in spring. However, if the repotting takes place in summer, the plant can be watered.

Tip

When repotting, remember that the desert rose is poisonous. Therefore, it is better to wear gloves to protect your skin!
