A single plant should become a whole group of plants, for example a hedge? Then it's time to propagate the wild rose. The following three methods are most commonly performed.
How can I propagate a wild rose?
To propagate a wild rose, you can sow seeds, cut cuttings or separate runners. Sowing requires a rest period in the refrigerator, while cuttings can root in water or potting soil and runners can be planted directly outdoors or in pots.
Sowing – not an easy undertaking
Sowing is only recommended for true-root wild roses. First, you need the seeds that you can harvest yourself. They are found in the bright red rose hips.
Collect the ripe rose hips in autumn. It's best to wait until the first frost has passed. The seeds of many varieties need a cold stimulus in order to germinate. The seeds of all varieties need a rest period of several weeks.
Sowing step by step
- Store seeds in the refrigerator at around 5 °C for 8 weeks
- then sow in pots with seed soil
- should be placed 0.5 to 1 cm below the surface of the earth (€6.00 on Amazon)
- place in a 10 to 25 °C warm place
- keep moist
- Germination time: several months to 2 years
- prick out and repot with 2 pairs of leaves
Cut cuttings and let them root
Propagation from cuttings is much faster and more effective:
- Period for taking cuttings: end of June to end of August
- 0, cut 7 to 1 cm thick, 20 cm long annual shoots
- Remove leaves in the lower part
- Lace with wilted flower caps
- Place the cutting in a glass with water
- alternatively: put in pot with potting soil and keep moist
- plant in May
Separate the runners and plant them
The trailing method is probably the easiest. In autumn or spring, approximately 15 to 20 cm long runners of the wild rose are cut off. The potato rose usually produces many runners. Over the years she has developed a whole thicket. You can plant the separated runners directly outdoors or grow them in a pot.
Tip
You can also simply leave the rose hips hanging on the bush and only pick them in spring or store and dry the fruits on the balcony. Then they don't need any artificial stratification.
