In spring they transform the bed and balcony into a breathtaking sea of flowers. To ensure that the tulip blossoms don't just appear briefly in the garden, it's important to have the right combination of early, medium and late varieties. We have compiled a brief overview of all the important information about the flowering period for you here.
When are tulips blooming?
The flowering period of tulips extends from spring to early summer. Early varieties, such as Fosteriana or Kaufmanniana tulips, bloom from March, middle varieties such as Triumph tulips from late April, and late varieties, such as Parrot or Peony tulips, bloom in May to June.
These tulips open the flower dance
The simple and double early varieties usher in the tulip spring in March and are particularly eagerly awaited. These are mostly these wild tulips:
- Fosteriana tulips, sometimes as early as February
- Kaufmanniana tulips from March to April
- Tulipa praestans, with the earliest classic 'Füselier'
In the pot, the early dwarf varieties, such as Tulipa tarda or Tulipa sylvestris, delight us with their long-lasting flowering period until April.
Colorful mediators between early and late varieties
If the early tulips run out of steam at the end of April, the middle varieties will be there on time. Now is the time for triumph tulips, such as 'Couleur Cardinal' and Darwin tulips, such as the innovative hybrid 'Red Impressions'. There are also the double Murillo tulips, whose short, sturdy stems can withstand the spring storms. The distinctive flower cups make our hearts beat faster until May.
Spring ends with these tulips
If all signs point to summer in nature, the late tulips will enjoy opening their opulent flowers in May. The following floral beauties take advantage of the milder weather to surpass the splendor of their predecessors:
- Parrot tulips with fringed, slit or ruffled petals from May to June
- Viridiflora tulips show off their green flamed flowers in May
- Peony tulips with lush double flowers in furious colors
It's not until May that the tulips of the Cottage series open their flowers, including the famous black 'Queen of the Night'.
