Roses, with their high nutrient requirements, are extremely heavy feeders. Regular fertilization is therefore essential so that the “Queen of Flowers” continues to sprout diligently and bloom tirelessly. But instead of supplying your roses with expensive special fertilizer, you can use coffee grounds or tea leaves for fertilization instead - free of charge and sustainably.
How do you fertilize roses with coffee grounds?
Roses can be effectively fertilized with dried coffee grounds: Distribute half a cup to a cup of dried coffee grounds around the plant about every four weeks and work them into the soil. Coffee grounds provide the roses with important nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.
Why coffee and black tea are good as fertilizers
Anyone who likes to drink coffee or black tea throws valuable organic material into the trash can every day. Coffee grounds and tea leaves still contain plenty of nutrients even after they have been brewed; especially nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. This valuable treasure should at least be recycled into the compost, but can also be used directly as fertilizer. Your roses will thank you! By the way, coffee grounds and tea leaves are equally suitable for fertilization, although coffee has a higher nutrient concentration.
Fertilize roses with coffee grounds
Roses (and of course other garden and potted plants) are easy to fertilize with coffee:
- After brewing, get the ground coffee out of the filter bag, pad or whatever you use.
- Dispose of waste as usual and
- spread the ground coffee over a large area on a board or baking tray.
- Let the coffee dry.
- Wet coffee powder should not be used for fertilization as it molds easily.
- Now fertilize your roses with the dried coffee grounds about every four weeks.
- Use half a cup to a cup of ground coffee, depending on the size and age of the plant.
- Work the flour well into the soil.
- Make sure that roses should no longer be fertilized by the end of June at the latest!
If you want to fertilize with tea, don't use the pure tea leaves, but water the plants with a strong infusion. You can also work the tea leaves into the soil.
Use banana peels only as additional fertilizer
Banana peels are also good for fertilizing, as they contain plenty of minerals and vitamins - especially potassium and phosphorus. However, the peels are not suitable for fertilizing roses alone because they lack the nitrogen that is so important for growth. However, you can occasionally incorporate the crushed banana peels into the soil as a he althy supplemental fertilizer. But be careful: If possible, only use organic bananas, because fruits from conventional cultivation have a very high level of harmful substances.
Tip
Fertilizing with coffee grounds not only supplies the plants with valuable nutrients and also attracts earthworms, but also lowers the pH value of the soil. However, you can counteract acidification by adding ground eggshells - these mainly consist of lime - to the coffee fertilizer.
