Monkshood (Aconitum) has been growing in nature since the last ice age in moist meadows, on the edge of sparse alluvial forests and on many mountain slopes. This attractive summer bloomer requires relatively little care if the location is tailored to the needs of the plant.
Which location does monkshood prefer?
The ideal location for monkshood plants is a light to partially shaded, wind-protected place with evenly moist, loose and nutrient-rich soil. Clay-rich soils are optimal. Plant monkshood in the middle of a flower bed to avoid contact with the poisonous components.
Suitable soil is important
The soil substrate is a very important factor when growing monkshood. It should meet the following criteria:
- as evenly moist as possible (but no waterlogging)
- loose soil structure
- nutrient-rich
Loamy soils are usually optimal, and the location should also be sheltered from the wind.
Match the location to the needs of the plant variety
Most varieties of monkshood prefer bright or partially shaded locations, but some also cope surprisingly well with full shade. In sunny locations, the soil can be protected from drying out with a layer of mulch.
Tip
Many gardeners prefer to plant monkshood in the middle of their flower beds. With its often considerable height, it can not only form the visual focal point between lower perennials, but is also less likely to be accidentally touched by its plant parts, which are poisonous when touched.
