At the end of the flowering period, hobby gardeners are uncertain about what to do with the tulip bulbs. Read here which care measures are already setting the course for the next flowering period.
How to care for tulip bulbs after flowering?
After flowering, you should remove wilted flower heads and only cut off tulip leaves when they are completely absorbed. Tulip bulbs can be left in the ground or dug up for fall storage and stored in a cool, dark place.
Dig up tulip bulbs at the right time - this is how it works
A tulip bulb acts similarly to a power plant. This is where the energy is generated and stored, which drives the flower stalk with its magnificent blossoms towards the sky. After flowering, the floral battery is almost empty. Now the remaining nutrients in the leaves are essential for creating fresh reserves. How to do it right:
- Only cut the tulip petals from the bulb once they are completely absorbed
- Cut off the withered flower heads beforehand to prevent unnecessary energy expenditure for seed growth
You can leave the tulip bulbs in the ground after flowering. Of course, from year to year they drill deeper into the ground and ultimately disappear completely. It's better if you dig up the flower bulbs and store them in a cool, dark cellar until autumn.
