Lenzenroses are quite easy to propagate yourself. There are two methods of propagation, the easiest of which is dividing the perennials. This is how you propagate a Lenten rose yourself.
How do I propagate spring roses successfully?
Lengen roses can be propagated by sowing or dividing. When dividing in spring, you divide the roots of the mother plant. When sowing, collect seeds in spring and sow them directly outdoors or in pots. Protect the seedlings from snow.
Propagate Lenten roses by sowing or dividing
You can propagate Lenten roses by sowing or dividing. When sowing seeds you have collected yourself, there is no guarantee that you will get plants with the same flower color.
When the roots are divided, however, it is guaranteed that the new plants are identical to the mother plant.
Dividing Lenten roses in spring
Dig up the perennial as deeply as possible in spring. Remember that the Lenten rose develops very long roots.
Prick the perennial in the middle with a sharp spade so that sufficient roots and leaf eyes remain on both parts.
Plant a part back to its previous location and look for a suitable place for the new perennial.
How to sow spring roses
- Collecting seeds in spring
- sow immediately directly outdoors or in pots
- only cover lightly with soil
- keep moist but not wet
- Protecting seedlings from snow
The flowering period of the Lenten rose begins in February or March and lasts several weeks. As soon as the flowers have dried up, cut them off and carefully shake out the seeds. It is sown immediately on the spot or in prepared seed pots.
It takes a very long time for germination. The first plant tips can usually only be seen in November.
Sowing in pots is preferable. The pots with the seedlings must remain outside over winter. Since the plants are still too tender to withstand thick blankets of snow, a covered location should be sought.
Where can you get pure seeds?
The Lenten rose tends to self-sow. However, the seeds are not of the same variety, so the new plants may have a different color.
Seeds for spring roses are rarely available to buy. Only specialist nurseries or swap meets that specialize in natural gardens occasionally offer the seeds.
Tip
If you want to prevent the spring rose from spreading uncontrollably, cut off the flowers as soon as they have faded.
