Venus fly traps are primarily used because of the decorative traps. The fact that the carnivorous plant also flowers beautifully only plays a minor role. The flower stalks form in spring and produce pretty flowers in spring.

When and how does a Venus flytrap bloom?

The Venus flytrap blooms from April to June with white flowers that sit on 30 to 50 cm long flower stalks. The flowers are up to 3 cm in diameter and have green veins on the petals.

This is how the Venus flytrap blooms

  • Flower stems between 30 and 50 cm long
  • Flower color white – green
  • Size up to 3 cm diameter

The flower of the Venus flytrap extends far beyond the traps so that pollinating insects are not caught. The flowers are hermaphroditic and not always self-pollinating. If you want to harvest seeds, you can fertilize with a brush (€12.00 on Amazon).

Several individual flowers form on each stem. They are hermaphrodite and fivefold.

The flower is formed by five green sepals and five white petals that have small green veins.

When does the Venus flytrap bloom?

The flowering period of the carnivorous plant begins in April. It lasts until June.

When the flowers have bloomed, the capsules develop in which the seeds ripen. Each capsule contains countless black seeds that are very fine.

To harvest the ripe seeds, place a bowl under the spent flower and shake it lightly. The seed just falls out. It must be kept in the refrigerator until sowing next spring. It is best to put it in a paper bag so that it is stored in a dark place.

Tip

Even though the Venus flytrap blooms beautifully, you should remember that the blooms weaken the plant. If you cut the flower stalks straight away, all the energy can be directed into growing the traps.
