Magnificent palm plants can be admired in gardens in our latitudes more and more often. This is made possible by winter-hardy species that, if properly cared for, can survive even lower temperatures. We have summarized the most important planting tips for the southern beauties for you in this article.
How do I plant palm trees correctly in the garden?
To plant palm trees in the garden, choose the right planting time (end of March to June), a sunny location, loose substrate and pay attention to sufficient planting distance. Plant the palm tree elevated, secure it with stakes and coconut ropes and get it used to the outdoor conditions beforehand.
The right planting time
Depending on the climatic conditions, you can plant the palm tree between the end of March and June. This means that the attractive plant can use almost the entire garden season to get used to the changed site conditions.
Location
Palm trees prefer a place that is as sunny as possible and protected from rain, wind and snow. A location near heated buildings is ideal, as it is slightly warmer here in winter. Choose a spot where the palm tree will be pampered by sunlight for a few hours, even in the cold season.
The substrate
Palm trees prefer loose substrates that are neither too sandy nor too clayey. Mix plenty of humus (€31.00 on Amazon), compost or special palm soil into the excavation of the planting hole. For some species it is advisable to add additional gravel so that the soil remains permanently loose.
Planting
First dig a planting pit that is twice as big as the root ball. Loosen the subsoil deeply and add a drainage layer of expanded clay or gravel. These plants are quite sensitive to moisture and are usually planted slightly elevated. Only if the garden soil is very sandy can you forego this measure and plant the palm at root level.
Tie up palm trees
Palm trees are not very stable, especially in the first year. Therefore, drive stakes into the ground to the right and left of the trunk and secure the plant with coconut ropes. Then water thoroughly.
Planting spacing
This depends on the variety and should generally be at least half of the expected growth width. So that the space under the southern beauties doesn't look so bare, you can plant the palm tree with flowers or herbs.
Advancing and propagating
Growing palm trees yourself is quite time-consuming. There are palm species whose seeds take two years to germinate. However, some species form offshoots and side shoots, which you can carefully cut off with a sharp knife in spring and plant in a pot.
The Blossom
It can take a few years for palm trees to start blooming outdoors. The frequently encountered hemp palm takes around ten years until it produces its first flowers. So don't lose your patience.
Tip
Since most palm trees in our latitudes are grown under glass, it is important to get the plant used to the unfamiliar conditions before placing it in the garden. A sheltered spot on the balcony or terrace without direct midday sun is ideal.
