Can vinegar be used against moss?
Vinegar can be used as a home remedy against moss on paved surfaces and in the lawn. Spray apple or wine vinegar roughly onto mossy stones and leave for one to two days, then scrub off. Moss killers with acetic acid, such as Naturen Organic Lawn Moss-Free, can be used on mossy lawns.
How to clean mossy paving surfaces with vinegar
All pleas for moss as a plant worthy of protection go unheard in the home garden when paved paths, areas and terraces are covered with a dirty green covering. As long as thick moss pads have not yet formed, vinegar is a tried and tested home remedy. This is how it works:
- In the first step, roughly scrape off the moss from the stone surface with a spatula
- Spray apple or wine vinegar over it (no spicy vinegar essence)
- Leave for a day or two and scrub off
If there are still moss residues after the first application, repeat the control with vinegar.

The moss killer with acetic acid is diluted with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. On a dry day between April and September, spray the product onto the mossy lawn. Within 3 to 4 days the moss turns yellow and can be combed out. If necessary, the treatment is repeated after 40 days. The treated lawn area should only be walked on again after the next cut.
Tip
To clean mossy garden furniture, hot water and soap are sufficient. As rootless spore plants, mosses cannot find sufficient support on plastic or wood. Before you resort to expensive cleaning products against moss or raid the kitchen's vinegar supply, simply wipe off the green deposits with the hottest water possible, soap and a sponge.
