As an evergreen decoration in the room, fresh moss takes the place of cocky potted plants. The fluffy, soft texture of the rootless land plant creates a natural atmosphere, and not just in the garden. Read practical tips here on how to harvest, plant and care for indoor moss.
How can you successfully care for moss in your room?
To cultivate moss indoors, you need a glass planter with a lid, lean, acidic substrate, fresh forest moss and a shady, cool location. Regular spraying with soft water keeps the moss nice and green, fertilizing is not necessary.
Harvesting moss for the room correctly – tips & tricks
Look out for moss growing on trees or rocks. In these locations there is usually no soil attached to the holding threads. You will cause less damage to the plant if you use your fingers rather than a tool to harvest. As a precaution, shake the collected moss so that any insects fall out.
Please pay particular attention not to remove more than half of a moss cushion so that the plant can regenerate. Do not go to designated protected areas to harvest moss, as removal is not permitted here.
Planting and caring for indoor culture – this is how it works
Since moss in the room is always at risk of drought stress, we recommend a glass planter with a lid or a tall glass cylinder. The higher the humidity, the longer the moss cushion stays green. This is how you plant and care for the living decorations professionally:
- Fill the planter with a lean, acidic substrate, such as succulent soil (€12.00 on Amazon) or peat sand
- Spread the moss on top and press it down
- Spray regularly with soft water in a shady, not too warm location
- Do not fertilize moss in the room
If the pot does not have a drain in the bottom, avoid watering the moss with a torrent of water if possible, as this can cause waterlogging. Please make sure that the mossy decoration does not come into direct sunlight. Small stones or pieces of wood provide a loosening up of the visual appearance.
Tip
A fresh moss carpet conjures up a natural, revitalizing ambience in the bathroom. What is required is a shallow, rot-resistant container (e.g. made from Plastazote), lean substrate and fresh moss from the forest. Arrange the moss pieces close together on a thin layer of soil. The wet climate in the bathroom is very comfortable for the rootless land plant. Spraying the living moss carpet with water every now and then is the whole care program.
