Brown spots on the money tree are more common. Most of the time they are not necessarily a cause for concern. However, the spots don't look so nice. Where do brown spots come from and how can they be prevented?
What causes brown spots on the money tree?
Brown spots on the money tree are caused by too much UV light or too much moisture in the root ball. Large spots indicate moisture problems, while smaller, irregular spots indicate sunburn. Avoid waterlogging and provide shade in strong midday sun.
Causes of brown spots on the money tree
There are two main causes of brown spots on the leaves of a money tree.
Either the houseplant is too moist or it has received too much UV light on the windowsill or outdoors.
If the spots are very large, this indicates there is too much moisture in the root ball. Smaller brown spots that appear irregularly are signs of excessive sun exposure.
Too much UV light causes brown spots
The money tree actually tolerates strong sunlight very well. Sometimes it gets a little too much for the houseplant. When the midday sun shines directly onto the leaves through the window in summer, the glass acts like a burning glass. Brown spots appear that are caused by sunburn. Provide some shade during this time.
Money trees love to spend the summer outdoors, where they prefer a very sunny spot. However, they have to slowly get used to direct sunlight.
First place the money tree in a place on the terrace or balcony where it receives more scattered light. After two to three weeks, the plant has adapted to the changed lighting conditions and can cope very well with a place directly in the sun. There will then be no more brown spots.
Too much moisture
Waterlogging or even a root ball that is always too moist does not harm the money tree. It is therefore better to water sparingly and make sure that no water can collect in the saucer. If there is water there, pour it away immediately.
When caring for an outdoor money tree, it is better to place the pot without a saucer. Then the rainwater can flow away unhindered and waterlogging is prevented.
Tip
If the money tree gets yellow leaves, in addition to a location that is too dark or cool, pests can also be responsible. You should always combat a pest infestation immediately so that the plant does not die.
