The dragon tree is one of the most popular houseplants in Europe and is also occasionally used as greenery on the balcony in summer. However, the temperatures in Central Europe are significantly too low in winter for long-term cultivation outdoors.
What temperatures are ideal for dragon trees?
Optimal temperatures for dragon trees are 18-24 degrees Celsius. The plants react sensitively to temperatures below 15 degrees. Canary Islands dragon tree can tolerate cooler winter temperatures of around 10 degrees. Direct sunlight and drafts should be avoided.
This exotic likes it warm
The vast majority of dragon tree species react very sensitively to temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius and sometimes quickly let their leaves droop. The Canary Islands dragon tree (Dracaena draco) is an exception because it can cope well with winter temperatures of around 10 degrees Celsius. The other dragon tree species, on the other hand, are uncomplicated and easy to care for if they are cultivated at around 18 to 24 degrees Celsius.
Choose the right location carefully
Considering the optimal temperatures, the windowsill seems at first glance to be the optimal place for a dragon tree. However, the following factors can cause a lot of trouble for the dragon tree:
- too strong sunlight
- Dehydration
- Draft
Locations with many hours of direct sunlight every day are rather unsuitable for dragon trees, although subspecies with more reddish leaves can tolerate a very bright place better than dragon trees with purely green leaves.
Tip
So that dragon trees feel comfortable indoors like in their natural habitat, you should ensure the humidity is as high as possible. To do this, you can regularly wet the leaves of the plants with a fine spray of water that has as little lime as possible.
