If the pond filter overflows, there is usually a real need and urgent action must be taken. You can find out in our article what causes the overflow can have in individual cases and what you can do to fix it.
Why is my pond filter overflowing and how do I fix the problem?
If a pond filter overflows, this can be caused by contamination in the filter outlet, insufficient height or a reduction in the outlet diameter, an unfavorable slope of the outlet pipes or clogged walls. Thorough cleaning or adjustment of the filter can resolve the problem.
Find out the cause
In many cases, the cause of the filter suddenly overflowing is difficult to determine. What you can definitely do is observe the filter first:
- when does the filter overflow?
- what changes are noticeable?
- Do you hear any noises?
- Does the filter regularly overflow at certain times?
- when does overflow occur?
In some cases you will be able to identify an external cause by closely observing the filter and the overflow. In other cases you will not notice any regularities or abnormalities.
Then take a careful look to see whether one of the typical causes of overflow occurs in your case:
- Filter outlet misplaced
- Filter outlet not high enough
- Filter outlet reduced
- Outlet pipes have too little gradient
- Walls of the outlet clogged
Filter outlet misplaced
It often happens that the filter outlet is completely or partially blocked - for example due to dirt or solid objects such as stones. Once the obstacle is removed, the filter should no longer overflow.
Filter outlet not installed high enough
If the distance from the filter outlet to the surface is too small, a backflow may occasionally occur. If the filter is placed higher, the problem usually solves.
Another solution can be exactly the opposite: filter outlet directly into the pond - sometimes that works too.
Filter outlet reduced
If there are reductions to smaller diameters on the filter outlet, you should remove them if possible. A reduction should never be added to the spout, the original diameter should always be maintained.
Outlet pipes have too little gradient
Increase the slope of the outlet pipes and see if that solves the problem.
Walls of the outlet clogged
Over the years, hard deposits can form on the walls that are difficult to remove. This can also sometimes be the cause of a backlog in the filter.
Tip
Try running the filter for 1-2 days without sponges. Another option could be to completely replace the sponges. Cleaning the filter should always be the first step anyway.
