We associate cacti with uncomplicated care that does not require a green thumb. This view is only partially true, because the successful keeping of exotic succulents requires important aspects to be taken into account. How do you keep cacti correctly?
Keeping cacti correctly requires a suitable location, appropriate watering and fertilization as well as a cool winter rest. Desert cacti prefer full sun and higher temperatures, while leaf cacti require a partially shaded, wetter location. In winter, cacti should be kept cool and rather dry.
The be-all and end-all is the right location
If the light and temperature conditions are to the liking of cacti, half of the journey is already done. The desires of desert cacti and leaf cacti differ slightly. How to make the right choice:
- Desert cacti: From March to September full sun to sunny at 20 to 35 degrees Celsius
- Leaf cacti: Partially shaded from March to September, preferably with higher humidity of 60 percent
- From May to August preferably on the balcony in a sunny or partially shaded place
For the winter, almost all types of cacti need a bright, cool location with 5 to 12 degrees Celsius. Without a cool winter rest, the plants produce no or only a few buds for the next flowering period.
Watering and fertilizing correctly at any time of the year – this is how it works
The main pillars in the professional care of cacti include a moist substrate during the growing season and dry soil during winter rest. How to do it right:
- From March to the end of August, let the soil dry thoroughly before watering thoroughly afterwards
- The larger the cactus, the longer the interval between waterings
- Enrich every second watering water with liquid cactus fertilizer
- Starting in September, reduce the water supply and no longer fertilize
In the period from November to February, desert cacti are almost dry in their cool winter quarters. For majestic columnar cacti, for example, water them thoroughly once in November, which usually covers their water needs until February. Leafy cacti will need to be watered every now and then to keep the root ball inside from drying out.
Tip
Cared for lovingly, cacti take on unexpected dimensions over time. Don't be afraid to regulate growth with pruning. The best time is in spring, when the winter break is coming to an end. Use sharp, disinfected tools and dust the wounds with charcoal ash.
