The quality of the location depends largely on whether the lighting conditions meet the requirements of the respective cactus species. Within the large plant family, a distinction is made between desert cacti and leaf cacti, which do not pull together in this respect. Read here what really matters when choosing a location.
Which location is best for cacti?
The optimal location for cacti depends on their origin: desert cacti prefer a location in full sun, such as on a south or southwest window, while leaf cacti appreciate a partially shaded location with mild sun in the morning or evening.
Origin defines the optimal lighting conditions
As their profile tells us, cacti are native to deserts, mountains and rainforests. Their origin determines which light creates the ideal conditions:
- Desert cacti: full sun location, preferably on a south or southwest window
- Leaf cacti: semi-shady location with mild sun in the morning or evening
All cacti are happy to have a place on the summer balcony. Most desert cacti produce their most beautiful flowers under direct summer sun. Although leaf cacti enjoy the fresh air, they also want to stay outdoors in a partially shaded location. The rainforest cacti feel particularly at home under the canopy of deciduous trees.
