The Clivia is a little demanding, but it's not too difficult to care for. In summer it needs a lot of water and fertilizer, in winter it likes to have a break to prepare for flowering.
How should you properly fertilize clivia?
Clivias should be supplied with liquid fertilizer in the irrigation water every 1-2 weeks in spring and summer. Long-term fertilizer can be given once a year. Fertilizing should be avoided during winter dormancy as this can lead to yellow leaves or lack of flowers.
How often should I fertilize my clivia?
Around February it will be time to end the winter dormancy, at the latest when the first blossoms appear. To ensure that the flowers are beautifully lush, give your Clivia a portion of liquid fertilizer every one to two weeks (€6.00 on Amazon).
If you mix this into the irrigation water, it will be evenly distributed around the root ball and all parts of the plant will be well cared for. If you have decided to give long-term fertilizer, then one fertilization per year is usually sufficient; it is best to do this in spring.
Should I fertilize my clivia all year round?
After flowering, fertilize your clivia at gradually increasing intervals until August or September. During this time, the Clivia is welcome to stand outside in a warm place in light shade.
Then the period of winter rest begins. Before the first night frosts, move the clivia to a frost-free winter quarters. Since it now reduces its metabolism, it no longer needs any additional nutrients and therefore should not be fertilized. Be sure to limit watering during this time.
What happens if I fertilize my clivias too much?
If there is an oversupply of nutrients due to too much fertilizer, the clivia will get yellow leaves after a while. This should be avoided if possible. During winter rest, too much fertilizer also leads to horny shoots, which weaken your clivia unnecessarily and it may then not bloom.
The most important things in brief:
- fertilize regularly in spring and summer
- every 1 to 2 weeks
- Add liquid fertilizer to the irrigation water
- Give long-term fertilizer only once a year
- Do not fertilize during winter rest
- too much fertilizer leads to yellow leaves
Tip
Always administer liquid fertilizer mixed into the irrigation water so that it is evenly distributed over the entire root ball.
