A stream designed with pebbles, surrounded by angular or round stones, which just babbles along, creates a unique flair around your garden pond. The stream can be quickly prepared with just a few materials and looks very natural with lots of greenery.
How do you design a garden pond with a stream?
A garden pond with a stream can be designed using pond liner or prefabricated parts, gravel, decorative stones, plants and a water pump. A harmonious stream with steps and gradients ensures a natural look and soothing babbling.
Although there is something very special about a quiet garden pond, the babbling of a stream can add an additional charm if it winds its way across the garden in as many curves as possible. Here, too, careful planning of the route is required, taking into account the gradient of the terrain, so that the pond is not “accidentally” pumped empty later by the stream.
Material for the stream at the ornamental pond
The following materials are required for the construction and subsequent design of the stream bed:
- Pond liner or remnants of it or finished parts for the stream;
- Gravel with grain sizes between 7 and 25 mm, also well suited: Upper Rhine pebbles 50 to 125 mm);
- Substructure materials for creating steps or slope sections (lean concrete, gravel, gravel);
- round or oval decorative stones in different sizes and color patterns;
- Grasses, ferns and perennials for planting the edges;
- Solvent welding agent for connecting the PVC films and a hot air dryer;
Prepare the stream bed and slope
After the roughly planned course of the stream has been marked on the site with a sturdy cord, the number of steps and their respective heights are determined. The optimal size for this is 20 to 30 cm, measured at a distance of between one and two meters. You can then start digging the stream bed to a depth of between 20 and 30 cm.
Where does the water for the garden pond stream come from?
The most clever and almost invisible way to get running water into the stream bed is to use a pump spiral hose. The required (and sufficiently powerful) water pump is placed directly in the pond at a depth of approx. 30 to 50 cm. Now the film can be laid out and buried with sand on the side edges - ideally similar to a capillary barrier when building a pond to prevent excessive water loss over the entire length of the stream.
Tip
After the stream has been staged in a natural way with pebbles and stones, you can brighten up the whole thing with attractive planting. Pennigwort, dwarf rushes, marsh marigolds and primroses as well as low-growing ferns and grasses are well suited.
