In their homeland, sun is in abundance, while rain is in short supply. To survive, succulents have developed an ingenious strategy that makes them the easiest houseplants to care for. You can find out here which species and varieties impress with their beautiful appearance.
Which succulents are suitable as houseplants?
Popular succulents as houseplants include echeveria, spurge, money tree, aloe, agave, poinsettia, flaming cat, queen of the night, Christ thorn, gold ball cactus and Christmas cactus. They impress with their appearance and require little care.
Evergreen ambassadors from distant countries
The following succulent houseplants provide convincing proof that floral splendor does not depend on colorful flowers. Elegant leaf rosettes or beautifully colored decorative leaves create impressive accents all year round:
- Echeverias (Echeveria) form colorful leaf rosettes with and without a trunk; Growth height 5 to 25 cm
- Spurge (Euphorbia), e.g. B. the spherical melon spurge, which develops into a column with age; 8 to 15 cm
- Money tree (Crassula ovata), a premium species among succulent houseplants; Growth height 50 to 150 cm
Aloe and agave cannot be missing from a selection of beautiful succulent houseplants. There are many different types of exotic foliage plants to discover, so that there is a perfect candidate for every living space.
Succulent flowers for the windowsill
Succulent houseplants sometimes torture us for a few years until they decide on their first flowering period. The following species and varieties compensate their gardener for the waiting time with a breathtaking display of flowers:
- Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), the indispensable classic for the Christmas windowsill; 20 to 50 cm
- Flaming Käthchen (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana), the flower-rich thick-leaved plant for the winter; 15 to 30 cm
- Queen of the Night (Selenicereus grandiflorus), the mysterious snake cactus for nighttime flower magic; 100 to 300 cm
- Christ's thorn (Euphorbia milii), a colorful autumn bloomer as a succulent, thorny shrub; 10 to 50 cm
Representing the most well-known succulent houseplants, the two cactus species are the gold ball cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) and the Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera). With its golden-yellow thorns and bright yellow flowers, a gold ball cactus is rightly named. The leaf cactus can safely do without sharp thorns for Christmas if it puts on its red flower dress from November to February.
Tip
Proper watering plays a key role in the summer care program for succulent houseplants. Water is only required when the substrate has demonstrably dried out. After a finger test, let the lime-free water run out of the jug spout until the coaster fills up.
