The Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost' is also known to many fans of balcony permanent bloomers as "magic snow". However, this name describes the visual effect of the numerous, small flowers and should not be misunderstood as a statement about frost tolerance.
How to overwinter Euphorbia Magic Snow?
In order to overwinter the Euphorbia Zauberschnee successfully, the plant needs a winter quarters with temperatures above 8°C, indirect light, protection from drafts and regular watering. Watch out for possible spider mite infestation and mold formation.
Magic snow doesn't appreciate real snow at all
Since the Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost' is not hardy at all in sub-zero temperatures, it is usually sold in specialist stores as an annual balcony plant. Specimens brought into winter quarters too late can show damage and become muddy even after light night frosts. If you really want the magic snow to get through the winter successfully, the temperatures usually have to be at least 8 degrees Celsius or even warmer.
The right care in winter
The optimal winter quarters for the magic snow should be:
- Provide protection from drafts
- don't be too dark
- be accessible for regular watering
- Provide temperatures of at least 8 degrees Celsius or warmer at all times
In the summer, the magic snow copes well with direct sunlight, but in the winter quarters it should be more indirect, despite sufficient brightness. Otherwise, direct sunlight can be harmful due to the associated temperature fluctuations.
Tip
In the winter quarters, magic snow can occasionally lead to an infestation of spider mites. Specimens infected with botrytis (a type of mold) must be disposed of immediately so that the fungal disease cannot spread to other plants.
