Plants give every pond its special charm and help to integrate it seamlessly into the garden. Plants also purify the water and serve as a refuge for fish, amphibians and other animals. Below you will find out what you should pay attention to when planting your prefabricated pond and which plants are suitable.
How do I plant a prefabricated pond correctly?
In order to properly plant a prefabricated pond, you should consider the different pond zones (deep water, shallow water, swamp and bank zone) and choose suitable plants for each zone. Pay attention to the correct planting density and ideally plant your pond with rainwater in late spring.
The pond zones at the prefabricated pond
Each pond is usually divided into four zones, which differ according to their depth and are therefore planted differently:
- Deep water zone: from 60cm (not always available)
- Shallow water zone: 10 to 50cm
- Swamp zone: up to 10cm
- Riparian zone: wet area around the pond
Depending on the pond zone, different pond plants are suitable for planting.
Deep water zone
Floating plants or floating leaf plants (with roots in the ground) and underwater plants can be planted in the deep water zone. For example:
Floating plants and floating leaf plants
- Frogbite
- crab scissors
- Seapot
- Water Lilies
- floating pondweed
- Pondroses
- Water knotweed
- Water Nut
Underwater plants
- Hornblatt
- Needle ledges
- Spring moss
- Fir fronds
- Thousandleaf
- Water Feather
- Water crowfoot
- Waterplague
Shallow water zone
The plants in the shallow water zone are half, sometimes more, in the water.
- Bulrushes
- Frog spoon
- Pikeweed
- Calmus
- Bulbs
- Horsetails
- Reeds
- Swamp iris
- Waterplague
Swamp Zone
In the swamp zone, the roots of the plants are permanently in the water.
- Bulrushes
- fever clover
- Frog spoon
- Juggler's Flower
- Ranunculus
- Laugenblume
- Meadowsweet
- Arrowweed
- Swamp Marigold
- Swamp Gladiolus
- Swamp Calla
- Swamp Forget-me-not
River Zone
Moisture-loving perennials and grasses thrive in the riparian zone. Ground covers are also pretty.
- Bamboo grass
- Loosestrife
- Günsel
- woman's coat
- Lungwort
- Mammoth Leaf
- Pennigkraut
- Magnificent Piers
- Primroses
- Sheet
- Stemflower grass
What should you consider when planting a prefabricated pond?
There are a few things to consider so that the plants feel comfortable and accept their new location.
When will the finished pond be planted?
The ideal time to plant a prefabricated pond is late spring. Sensitive plants should only be planted when frost is no longer expected.
How is the prefabricated pond planted?
When planting in the shallow water and swamp zones, ensure that the plants cannot slip. You can either use plant baskets (€1.00 on Amazon) or attach the plants with stones. It is best to fill your prefabricated pond with rainwater, as many aquatic plants are sensitive to lime.
How densely should you plant?
Keep in mind that your pond plants will grow and spread. If you don't want the entire pond to become overgrown in a very short time or if you have to constantly cut back plants, it's better not to plant the plants too close together. Three to five plants per square meter in shallow water and swamp zones are sufficient. Under water there should only be two to three per square meter. Make sure that the water surface only increases to a maximum of two thirds!
